How to Use a Moka Pot

A Moka pot is a stovetop coffee maker that brews rich, espresso-like coffee by forcing hot water through ground coffee using steam pressure. Invented in Italy in the 1930s, it consists of a bottom chamber for water, a middle basket for coffee grounds, and a top chamber where the brewed coffee collects.

The Moka pot produces great coffee because the high-pressure brewing process extracts intense flavors and aromas, creating a bold, full-bodied cup with a characteristic crema. Its design allows for a concentrated brew that captures the coffee’s natural oils, rivaling espresso machines in quality.

However, if not used correctly—such as with improper heat, incorrect grind size, or overpacking the coffee—it can produce bitter, burnt, or weak coffee, as the balance of pressure, temperature, and extraction is critical to its success.

In this video I will show you how critical brew temperature is, and how easy it is to keep the temperature in the correct range so that you can brew an excellent coffee every time!
