Custard Tarts!

Portuguese Custard Tarts

Portuguese custard tarts are one of the easiest and most satisfying desserts to make with a sheet of puff pastry. Luckily, we can buy puff pastry sheets at your local grocery store, making this a convenient go-to recipe when entertaining guests, or having that sweet craving for something delicious!

Makes 12

Ingredients for the rolls:
– 2 sheets of store-bought puff pastry
– Cinnamon
– Sugar

Ingredients for the custard:
– 1.5 cups of creme fraiche (thick unsweetened whipping cream)
– 1 egg
– 1/4 cup of sugar
– 1/2 tbsp of vanilla
– 2 teaspoons of orange zest

Ingredients for Caramel:
– 1/2 cup of sugar
– 1/4 cup of orange juice

Instructions:

1. Cover top of puff pastry sheet with cinnamon and sugar. Roll. Cut into 6 equal pieces. Stand each piece up, and squish down with the palm of your hand into a puck.

2. Put each dough puck into the cup of a muffin pan, and shape it like a cup.

3. Bake in an oven at 400 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from oven.

4. In a bowl, mix the ingredients for the custard.

5. Add a spoonful of the custard into each puff pastry cup. Put back in oven and bake until the custard browns slightly on top (about 5 minutes). Remove from oven.

6. To make the caramel, heat a pan. Add sugar and let it start to melt. Once sugar starts to melt, add a splash of orange juice and cook down until it’s an amber colored liquid caramel with no lumps or crystals.

7. Drizzle each tart with a little bit of the caramel. Let it cool for 15 minutes before eating, as the caramel is extremely hot.
